When it comes to horror movie villains, you can\’t get much scarier than Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street series or Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th films. One reason they\’re so frightening is that no matter how many times they\’re defeated, they keep coming back. Now, turn on all the lights in the house and look under the beds, because Freddy and Jason are back — as cupcakes. (Cue the slasher music.) The Freddy cupcakes feature his trademark red and green sweater, along with that deadly glove with razor claws. Jason\’s cupcakes showcase his iconic hockey mask with a knife going through the eye. Whichever ones you choose to make, you\’re going to have a bloody good time.

Making Jason Voorhees Cupcakes

Step 1: Start with the Base Layer

To create a base that Jason\’s hockey mask will lay on, roll out a thin layer of black fondant with a fondant roller. You can also use a rolling pin.

black fondant

Cut out a round circle with a 2-inch round cookie cutter.

These 2-inch fondant circles are the perfect size for a standard cupcake.

Tip

As your fingers touch the fondant, the heat makes makes it sticky and difficult to work with. If you are having trouble with overly sticky fondant, just let it sit untouched for a few minutes at room temperature. It will harden up yet remain pliable.

Step 2: Make the Hockey Mask

Roll out a thin layer of white fondant.

white fondant

Use the round cookie cutter to cut a circle out of the fondant.

Then use the cookie cutter to trim the sides of the circle to form an oval shape.

Cut out the eye holes in the mask with a #12 round piping tip.

eye holes

Use a smaller round piping tip, a #3 for example, to cut out the smaller ventilation holes in the mask. Look at a photo of Jason\’s actual mask for reference, but feel free to take some creative license.

Draw the red markings on the mask with a red candy decorating pen.

Step 3: Make the Knife

Create some grey fondant by mixing about 8 parts white fondant with 1 part black fondant. Knead with your fingers until it becomes a uniform grey color.

mix fondant

Roll a thin layer of the grey fondant.

grey fondant

Cut the grey fondant into little rectangles of 1/4 inch by 1 inch. Use a fondant cutter, a sharp knife or a pizza cutter. I use a pastry dough cutter.

rectangles

Cut a piece at an angle off the bottom of the rectangles to create more of a knife shape.

angle

For the knife handle, flatten a piece of black fondant and cut out small rectangles of 1/4 inch by 1/2 inch.

black handles

Attach the handles to the knives. The fondant should be sticky enough for the pieces to meld. If it has dried out, just moisten the edges with a dab of corn syrup. Use your fingertip to create an indentation in the handle.

Insert a toothpick into the tip of the knife about a half inch deep.

toothpicks

Squeeze some red gel icing or writing icing onto the tip of the knife.

Step 4: Assemble the Jason Cupcake

I baked chocolate cupcakes from a box cake mix, but you can make them from scratch if you wish.

cupcake

Spread a thin layer of frosting on the cupcake. Because the purpose of this frosting is to act like a glue to hold the base layer of fondant, I just used store-bought frosting instead of making it from scratch.

frosting

Place the base layer on the cupcake, allowing the frosting to hold it in place.

Center the hockey mask on the black fondant.

Slide the knife into one of the mask\’s eye holes, inserting the toothpick to hold it upright.

These cupcakes are a real scream.

Making Freddy Krueger Cupcakes

Step 1: Create the Sweater Fabric

Freddy\’s sweater is red and green stripes, so start by rolling out a thin layer of green fondant.

Then roll out a thin layer of red fondant.

red fondant

Cut the red fondant into half-inch stripes.

stripes

Position the red stripes on the green fondant, spacing them out evenly.

Step 2: Cut Out Striped Circles

Using the round cookie cutter, cut out striped circles.

When cutting out the circles, try centering the stripes so they are evenly distributed.

Step 3: Make the Blades

Mix some more grey fondant using the white and black fondant. Then roll the grey fondant into a thin layer.

grey fondant

Cut a circle out of the grey fondant.

Use the same round cookie cutter to cut crescent shapes out of the circle. These crescents will be the blades.

crescents

Trim the crescents to make the blades about an inch and a half long. Freddy\’s glove has four blades.

Step 4: Finish the Glove

Press four pieces of brown fondant into dime-sized disks. You can do this with your fingers. They do not need to be perfect.

brown fondant

Wrap the base of each blade with one of the brown fondant disks.

blade base

Press the four blades together at the brown fondant base. The brown fondant separates the blades while holding them together.

brown base

Roll an oval-shaped piece of brown fondant and attach it to the base of the four blades to complete the glove. The pieces will adhere by pressing them together firmly.

Step 5: Assemble the Freddy Cupcake

Spread a thin layer of frosting on the cupcake.

frosting

Place the red and green striped fondant layer on top of the frosting.

striped fondant

Position the glove on the striped fondant, pressing the two parts together to adhere them.
